Faux Finishes

Faux painting or Faux finishing are terms used to describe a wide range of decorative painting techniques. The naming comes from the French word faux which translates to “false”. These techniques started as a form of replicating materials such as marble and wood with paint, but has subsequently come to encompass many other decorative finishes like leather, stone, plaster and metallic paints for walls and furniture.

Real Finishes-

Throughout this site you will find all types of finishes both real and faux.  Over time all the finishes we create have been lumped into the category of “faux” but a lot of the ones you find on this site are real finishes like Venetian Plaster. Made of water, lime and marble dust, Venetian plaster has been used in Italy for thousands of years. It is also a breathable finish which means it can take in and release water so it makes for a great choice for almost any room including bathrooms. Gold and Silver leaf is another example of a real finish that has been around for thousands of years and still has a place in traditional and contemporary designs.

Faux Finishes-

Like some of the real finishes, true faux finishes like faux wood or faux marble have a very long history in design as well. Examples of faux marble date back to Pompeii times and faux wood was used during the Renaissance. While the word faux might bring to mind images of sponging and rag rolling, the industry has reinvented itself in the last decade. An industry that has put its creativity to good use. Creating new products and new application to inspire. Products like glass beads or metallic plasters, products that can elevate any decor. Whatever finish you decide on, I have hundreds of possibilities for you to choose from and I look forward to working with you on your next project!
